Proper media coverage

We picked up this story on our feed here at pennydean.org but it deserves special attention. Howard Nemerov, one of the good guys at www.examiner.com took note of the way a particular story was presented in the mainstream media. Was it journalism, or was it editorializing about guns?

The story is about the violent death of a home invader, someone who was shot by the homeowner. Sadly, this criminal was 14 years old, and now becomes one of the statistics of one of the "children" who may be considered a victim of "gun violence."

The difference between media bias and professional investigative journalism isn’t about the number of times one mentions “teens,” or interviewing family members who invariably eulogize the deceased. It’s simply about reporting the facts of the case and covering it from all angles, thereby helping create an informed, educated public.
