More Gun Violence

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Charleston Mayor Danny Jones revealed at a Sunday evening news conference that "there's every reason to believe" friendly fire killed Patrolman Jerry Jones.

Patrolman Jones was shot and killed during a chase that ended in the Quick area of Kanawha County after 1 a.m. Sunday morning. Story here.

This is a terrible tragedy, as it is when any law-abiding citizen is killed, civilian or otherwise.

Yes, we meant "civilian." Often you hear of a distinction between "police" and "civilians" when in reality, police are, by definition, civilians. They are not part of the "armed forces". And I bring this up for a reason.

Bring it closer to home and think about this: What would the headline be if you were the armed civilian defending your life, and one of your stray bullets killed a police officer?

Our hearts go out to the family and friends of Ptl. Jones, and are saddened by this senseless loss of life. We also are reminded that the gun is not the bad guy; the truck is not the bad guy; the bad guy is the bad guy. Should we change the headline of our article? Any suggestions?
