Investigation Reveals Massive Ammo Theft at Cabela's Christiana Store

Cabela's, the popular sporting goods and outdoor store, is currently under investigation for lax shoplifting prevention after approximately half a million rounds of ammunition were stolen from its Christiana Mall location in Delaware, according to a statement released by the Delaware Department of Justice (DOJ) on Monday.

The DOJ believes that the stolen ammunition, which disappeared over the course of less than a year, was primarily sold to drug dealers and other criminals in Delaware and Pennsylvania. The extent of the stolen ammunition's distribution to criminal elements is still being determined by investigators.

In response to the theft, the DOJ issued a subpoena to Cabela's, which accused the company of failing to promptly and meaningfully respond to the state's request for information. The DOJ has now requested the Delaware Superior Court to enforce the subpoena against Cabela's.

The investigation focuses on whether Cabela's violated any laws, including Delaware's firearms industry public nuisance law, due to its previous lack of effort to prevent shoplifting of ammunition. Cabela's later relocated the ammunition behind a sales counter after receiving the subpoena.

The DOJ is also examining potential violations of the Keshall "KeKe" Anderson Safe Firearms Sales Act, which repeals special immunity previously granted to gun dealers. Cabela's had faced a civil suit in 2018 related to the sale of a firearm involved in a shooting resulting in the death of an innocent bystander, KeKe Anderson.

Delaware Attorney General Kathy Jennings emphasized the need for responsible business practices and urged gun dealers to take reasonable measures to prevent gun violence. The DOJ seeks court intervention to ensure community safety and hold Cabela's accountable for the theft and its response to the investigation.
