Gun laws in Chicago: real world

There is a story from the Chicago Breaking News Center ( thanks http://www.chicagobreakingnews.com ) about someone who was arrested after the following alleged events:

Assaulted a man on a street corner

Kidnapped at gunpoint

Taken to the person's home and performed a home invasion

Kidnapped man's wife

Robbed man and his wife at gunpoint

Forced to go to check cashing center at gunpoint

Assaulted police officer using gun as club, battery against officer during arrest

Assaulted other police officer, battery knocking officer to ground

In the reader comments, there is an individual named "Steve" who implies that gun laws need to be tighter in order to prevent this kind of crime.

We need more "common sense" gun laws so that violent criminals who are released from prison before serving less than half their sentence don't have access to firearms. We should blame manufacturers and lobbying groups whenever violent career criminals who get out of prison much too early have access to banned handguns.

Oh, yes. There was one more part of the story, again from the CBNS: "Arterberry is on parole for a 2005 felony armed robbery conviction, in which he was originally sentenced to 10 years in prison. He was released from Robinson Correctional Center in August, according to the Illinois Department of Corrections."

If I read the comment correctly, we should blame manufacturers of firearms when violent criminals are released from prison before serving less than half their sentence? Is this reasonable?

Another comment makes the point well: "Guns don't break laws, people do."
