Fake bullets still results in "Unlawful possession of ammunition" charge

BOSTON —A Watertown man is facing charges after police say he boarded an MBTA bus with fake ammunition.

Police responded to reports of a man with a gun on an MBTA bus in Brighton at around 4:20 p.m. on Friday.

Police say the driver pulled the bus over near Cambridge Street and Harvard Street after a man boarded the bus with what appeared to be military-grade ammunition strapped around his waist.

The bus driver told police passengers were in a panic, fearing the man had a weapon.

The man, later identified as Kevin Young, 26, of Watertown, then allegedly exited the bus before he was stopped by police on Penniman Road.

Police recovered 69 replica bullets from Young, as well as what police describe as spiked fighting gloves and spiked leather bracelets.

Young was charged with unlawful possession of ammunition, unlawfully carrying a dangerous weapon and disorderly conduct. He is expected to appear in Brighton District Court.

Unanswered questions:

It is interesting to note that "officers assigned to District D-14 (Brighton) responded to a call for a person with a gun on an MBTA bus in the area of Cambridge and Harvard Streets." The facts show that there was no gun, no person with a gun, and when police finally did arrive after bus riders calling 911, "the driver stated that the passengers were in a panic, fearing that the suspect was about to pull out a weapon."

There is no indication why the passengers "feared" this, nor if any of these passengers were charged with filing a false police report.
