Erosion of rights

Franklin is reported to have said "Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety." Faithful readers of our site are familiar with that quote. With that in mind, please note the following excerpt from Tallahassee's WCTV web site:

In the wake of his failed attempt, the Netherlands will begin using the scanners on all passengers taking flights to the United States.

Local passengers have mixed feelings about the technology in all U.S. airports.

Airline passenger Penny Dean said, "I think it would be very uncomfortable. It would be kind of annoying having to do that. But, I understand the reasons behind it. I'd cooperate, but it wouldn't be with a lot of good cheer."

Officials say there are similar scanners being used in 19 U.S. airports that take up to 30 seconds.

But, the new full body scanners can scan under passengers' clothing in a few seconds, displaying an image that is quite revealing.

Tallahassee airport passenger Michael Dean said, "I'm flexible. As long as I could get on the plane and get to where I want it to be, and not have to wait hours in line, I'm for it."

Of course, neither of these people named "Dean" is our own Penny Dean, and again, our faithful readers would know that as well.

While it is true that the passengers quoted here have the right to give up their right, they do not have the right to deny the rest of us our rights. Right?
