Apple exec allegedly offered Bay Area cop iPads for gun permits

The head of global security at Apple, Thomas Moyer, is facing a bribery charge for allegedly offering over $50,000 worth of iPads to the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office in exchange for concealed carry weapon permits for Apple’s executive security team. This charge was reinstated by a tribunal of judges in California’s 6th District Court of Appeal, after a lower court had initially dismissed it.

Moyer's involvement began when Apple’s executive protection team sought permits to respond to serious threats against CEO Tim Cook. The permits had been delayed, and during a meeting, Moyer sent an email with the subject line “iPad Donation.” Moyer then organized the iPad donation within Apple while concealing the pending weapon licenses. The request for iPads increased from 50 to 200, and the executive protection team eventually received their licenses.

The charge of bribery has been a focal point of litigation, with arguments about the definition of the term and whether Moyer had corrupt intent. The appeals court ruled that evidence indicated a potential need for bribery due to the stalled permit applications. Moyer's lawyers plan to continue fighting the case.
