Hackers say they breached FBI, stole data on bureau employees

On Tuesday, hacking group ShinyHunters claimed it breached the Federal Bureau of Investigation, stealing data on thousands of employees and applicants while defacing the agency's recruitment website with a seizure notice.

Retaliating against a May 2026 FBI advisory detailing their tactics, the group demanded the agency 'correct or simply remove' the report, describing the hack as coercion rather than financially motivated.

News outlets verified portions of the allegedly stolen data by matching names and addresses against credit bureau records, finding apparent matches in at least nine cases, including details on FBI Director Kash Patel.

The FBI confirmed it is investigating claims of unauthorized activity affecting FBIjobs.gov, which remained 'currently unavailable' on Tuesday alongside the Special Agent Applicant Portal.

Cyber experts warn the potential exposure of home addresses and family details creates significant security risks, as this marks the second known breach of an FBI system this year.
